Who can Belong to CIFST?

Founded in 1951, CIFST is the national association for food industry professionals. Its membership of more than 1000 is comprised of scientists and technologists in industry, government and academia who are committed to advancing food science and technology.

Below are the categories of membership, annual dues and elgibility crtieria for each category.

Individuals working professionally in the food sector in industry, government and academia.

Specifically, CIFST By-laws prescribe that:

A Professional Member shall be, (1) a person actively engaged in Food Science and Technology for a period of two years and holding a Bachelorís degree or equivalent in a field of science, or (2) a person holding a Masterís degree or Doctoral degree in a field of science, or (3) a person who has a minimum of seven years experience in Food Science and Technology and holds a responsible position therein, or (4) a person not actively engaged in Food Science and Technology but who, in the opinion of the committee so designated, qualifies by virtue of past experience and /or specialised training.

Associate

Individuals connected to the food industry.

Specifically, CIFST By-laws prescribe that:

An Associate Member shall be a person actively interested in Food Science and Technology but not classified as a Professional Member.

Retired

Individuals who have retired from active involvement in the food science and technology fields, but who wish to retain a professional connection with the Institute.

Specifically, CIFST By-laws prescribe that:

A Retired Member shall be any Professional Member who has retired from remunerative professional life in the agri-food sector and who has been a member of the Institute for at least ten years. Certification of qualifying membership will be verified by the Executive Director.

Student

Individuals currently registered in food science and technology programs at recognized educational institutions.

Specifically, CIFST By-laws prescribe that:

A Student Member shall be a person in full attendance in courses directed towards a career in Food Science and Technology.

Sustaining

Organizations (corporations, universities, colleges, associations, government departments and agencies). This category includes one professional/associate membership.

Specifically, CIFST By-laws prescribe that:

A Sustaining Member shall be a Corporation, an incorporated Association, a College or University, a government Department or Agency actively involved in the food industry.

The above annual fees are in Canadian funds and are exclusive of applicable tax.

The Membership year is January 1 to December 31.

The Basic CIFST Membership Fees above include membership either in the nearest CIFST Regional Section OR as a "Member-at-Large".  Members may join other Regional Sections for an additional cost of $16 per Section.
