Dr. Jim Smith

Jim Smith has been a professional member OF CIFST 1988.  During his 25-year career with BIO|FOOD|TECH (formally PEI Food Technology Centre), Jim has shared his experience and passion for food science with numerous food companies, in Atlantic Canada and abroad, to help them commercialize new product ideas that improved their business and helped develop the local economy. His fervent commitment to ensuring that Canadian food companies have access to the necessary food science and technology expertise and testing facilities led him to become directly involved in the creation and oversight of new national collaborative initiatives, including FOODTECH Canada, a network of Canadaís 12 food technology centres, and Innoventures Canada, a network for commercializing research and technology.

Jimís commitment to the food sector extended to his involvement in CIFST. He believes in the benefits of networking with food science and technology professionals at both the section and national levels. Not one to stay on the side lines, Jim never hesitated to get involved and take on responsibilities. Jim became involved in the national executive in 2005 and occupied several positions, served on and chaired a variety of committees between 2005 and 2010, including Chair of the 2008 CIFST/AAFC National Conference in Charlottetown, and a member of the Governance Review Committee. During that same time period, he was instrumental in revitalizing activities in Atlantic Canada where CIFST activities had been few and far between during the early 2000ís. In the fall of 2006, he started meeting with CIFST members and potential members in the region to determine the interest in setting up an Atlantic Section. He recruited volunteers for a section management committee and volunteered to chair this committee for the first two years, from 2007 to 2009. Jim continued his involvement in the section management committee until 2011.

When Jim became President of the CIFST national Board of Directors national in 2007, CIFST was conducting a Governance review. He had been a proponent of this review from the very early stages and played a major role in the process and on the Governance Review Committee. In 2008, once the governance review was completed, CIFSTís new by-laws and new governance model were adopted. In order to facilitate a smooth transition, it was felt that the Executive Committee should continue for another year to provide continuity to the Board. Jim agreed to serve as president for a second term. As a result of his leadership during those two terms, a modern governance system was implemented.

Jim has invited and encouraged many CIFST members to become involved in section or national committees, and several have followed his example. For his many years of service to CIFST and his diligent efforts in maintaining and furthering the reputation and aims of the Institute, Jim Smith is a very deserving recipient of the Institute Award.
