2014 William J. Eva Award


Dr. Richard Ablett

Richard Ablett has been a professional member of CIFST for 31 years, and throughout his career he has strived to conduct research and establish facilities or R&D networks that are beneficial to the agri-food and seafood sectors. Involving academe, industry and public sector agencies, these networks have lead to many food sector initiatives in Atlantic Canada, across Canada and abroad.

In his present position with Perennia BioVentures, Richard is helping to create business growth and value chain developments with Atlantic bioresources, as part of a movement towards developing the bio-economy for Nova Scotia and the Atlantic region. Emphasis is directed to the field of nutraceuticals, bioactives, functional ingredients and bio-products.

During his previous position as CEO of the Atlantic BioVenture Centre, he was responsible for establishing technology transfer activity and commercial ventures in conversion and value addition relating to agri-food and aqua-food bioresources at domestic and international levels.

As Director of bioscience development with Technology P.E.I., Richard was responsible for developing and establishing an advanced food science and bioscience-based research / corporate cluster in P.E.I. in harmony with the University of Prince Edward Island, the P.E.I. Food Technology Centre and the newly established NRC Institute for Nutriscience and Health.

As executive director of the P.E.I. Food Technology Centre, he was responsible for the establishment and development of this state-of-the-art facility that had a mandate to work with and for the P.E.I. and Atlantic Canada food and fishery sector.

Numerous food companies have benefited from the work conducted by the various establishments or networks instigated or lead by Richard. In addition, he has conducted numerous research and development projects of benefit to the agri-food or seafood sectors. He was successful in obtaining many NSERC academic research grants and numerous capitol acquisition and industrial facility establishment grants. He was also the principal investigator on more than 65 industrial research and development contracts. All this research has resulted in eight patents issued, six patents pending, more than 30 publications in refereed journals and 16 publications in published proceedings.
