2015 Student Leadership Award

2015
Student Leadership Award

Kun Wang

Kun Wang is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Manitoba, Food Science Department, focusing his research in the area of pea, canola and wheat proteins.  Kun is always keen to provide assistance, and his strong leadership and communication skills are a valuable asset to CIFST.  He has demonstrated tremendous reliability, as well as willingness to support the Manitoba Sectionís continued success.  Taking on responsibilities in many different capacities, he has made a meaningful difference and impact during his volunteer journey with CIFST.

He has been a CIFST Student member since 2010, and in this short time, he has distinguished himself as an outstanding role model for his peers.  Kunís volunteering with CIFST began when he joined the Manitoba Section Management Committee (SMC) as an Undergraduate Student Representative for the Food Science Department at the University of Manitoba.  In this role, his liaison and promotion efforts created greater awareness among undergraduates about the advantages of being a student member of CIFST.  His approach also resulted in the recruitment of more student members, and increased the number of undergraduate volunteers and attendees at events.

Kunís teamwork skills were also highlighted in this position through his active participation on the SMC and by regularly assisting at Section events.  He was one of the organizers of the student career night Ė even volunteering as emcee one year Ė and before he concluded his term as Undergrad Student Rep, he diligently provided training to his replacement to facilitate the transition.

During the 2014-2015 term, as SMC Communication Coordinator, Kun developed into a strong leader.  Taking on a wide variety of communication responsibilities in this role, Kun managed the Sectionís e-mail account, web pages, e-mail messages and event notices, and assisted with the administration of the Sectionís social media channels.  He was especially outstanding and instrumental in support of the 2015 Manitoba Section Supplier Expo, expertly updating the web site and designing special e-bulletins, both critical components of the success.

Even when Kun took a break from volunteering as a member of the SMC, he affirmed his commitment by representing the CIFST Manitoba Section as a volunteer in two community initiatives co-organized with the Departments of Manitoba Health and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (MAFRD).  Kun has also volunteered as a CIFST Special Award Judge for Manitoba Schools Science Symposium.  Conducting technical interviews with all levels of student competitors, Kunís leadership ability was especially highlighted.
