2016/2017 Incoming President's Message

Incoming President's Message
Dr. Michael Nickerson

Under my leadership, we will be looking to carry on with many of our strategic initiatives, while at the same time keeping CIFST fiscally strong. These include:

  • Launching our new website, which has been previously delayed with the retirement of our IT developer. Carol Ann Burrell and Ann Manley have since corrected this, with a new IT supplier, to put us back on track.
  • Launching new member-only benefits, focused on knowledge transfer through webinars, white papers, soft-skills training.
  • Work to build partnerships with FoodTech Canada partners for discounts in specialized training workshops.
  • Put a greater focus on membership growth and retention through offering greater benefits and increased visibility of the organization through marketing.
  • We plan to expand the role of our Scientific Expert Panels within each strategic area. Already they handle public interest items, including media coverage. We plan to capitalize on their expertise more through Canadian Food Insights magazine, white papers, and increased participation in section events as speakers.
  • Begin planning our next conference to be held in 2018.
  • Finally, CIFST will continue to explore and participate in allied events and partnership opportunities. For example, benefit sharing between CIFST and IFT.

CIFST exists and remains strong because of volunteers that put tireless hours into making our sector stronger. I strongly encourage you all to become engaged, step out of your comfort zone, and make your CIFST section strong.

Over the next year, I am looking forward to building stronger relationships with sections, the board and the management so that together we can continue to tackle challenges, grow our membership and strengthen the Food and Beverage Sector across Canada.
