Dr. Rotimi Aluko

Rotimi Aluko is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba. He obtained a PhD Food Science degree in 1996 from the University of Guelph. He joined the University of Manitoba in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 2010.   

Rotimi has established a world-renowned research program related to the production of bioactive peptides through enzymatic hydrolysis of food proteins. By working with Canadian companies and identifying value-added opportunities for local crops, he has contributed significantly to food science and technology in Canada.  These achievements, combined with numerous and wide-ranging academic contributions, as well as his active and long-standing volunteer contributions to CIFST and other professional associations, illustrate Rotimiís exceptional leadership in the sector.

In addition to authoring or co-authoring more than 160 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books dealing with protein chemistry, food enzymology, functional foods and nutraceuticals, and bioactive peptides, Rotimi holds four international patents on plant peptide, one of which has been licensed to an industrial partner for commercialization. Rotimi has a training history that includes more than 30 people at the Postdoctoral, Technician, PhD, MSc and BSc levels.  His research and training accomplishments, combined with his industry partnerships, earned him the 2015 CIFST William J. Eva Award for outstanding research and service contributions to the Food Industry.

An active Professional Member of CIFST for more than 20 years, Rotimi served as the 2011/2012 National President of CIFST, and was Section Chair and a long-time Section Management Committee member in Manitoba. He was also Chair of the Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods Division of the Institute of Food Technologists, as well as Chair of the Protein and Co-Products Division of the American Oil Chemistsí Society. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Food Biochemistry and is an Associate Editor for Journal of Functional Foods and Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research.
