Student Leadership Award

Lan Shi

Lan Shi graduated from the Department of Food Science at the University of Manitoba in February 2016 with a MSc. He also obtained a BSc in Food Science at the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor’s degree of Food Science Engineering at Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. During graduate studies, Lan mainly focused on quantitative assessment of anti-nutritional properties in Canadian-grown legumes. He is currently working in the Department of Animal Science at University of Manitoba as a laboratory technician.

Lan has been a member of CIFST and involved in the CIFST Manitoba Section Management Committee (SMC) since 2014, where he initially served as a Graduate Student Representative for the Food Science Department at University of Manitoba. In this role, which he held for one term, he acted as a solid liaison between the Manitoba SMC and Food Science Graduate students. This position was important to the Manitoba Section as he was able to recruit students from the Food Science Department, resulting in increasing CIFST awareness and membership. He attended monthly SMC meetings and provided updates of his activities, helping to maintain an active SMC and demonstrating his ability to work as part of a team. Lan prepared reports for the Manitoba Section AGM and wrote event summaries for the Manitoba Newsletter “Food File”. He also sent e-mails about CIFST and advantages of being a student member to other graduate students in the department, and promoted CIFST events among graduate students. His efforts helped increase the number of attendees and the recruitment of volunteers. Along with other students, Lan helped to organize the student career night and assisted with logistics and on-site activities for various section events. He even recruited and trained his undergraduate student replacement for the next term, facilitating a smooth transition.

Lan Shi has also volunteered as a CIFST Special Award Judge for the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium, the largest annual science event held for students throughout Manitoba, for which he conducted technical interviews with students of different grades in order to obtain finalists for different awards categories. In 2014, he volunteered as a Security & Donation Receptionist for the IUFoSTcan Campaign, a special initiative of the CIFST-hosted World Congress of Food Science and Technology in Montreal.

For the 2015 – 2016 term, Lan Shi served as the Manitoba SMC Newsletter Editor. In this demanding role, he published three issues, for which he set deadlines, recruited writers, edited articles, coordinated photography for events, and completed the design and layout of each issue for review and distribution. For the current 2016-2017 term, Lan Shi has taken on role of financial reviewer for the Section.

Lan has also volunteered for other organizations. He is a former Vice-President of the Food Science Graduates Association at the University of Manitoba, and he was a student volunteer for Folklorama and Agriculture in the City in Winnipeg.

Lan Shi is always keen to provide assistance when needed. He has demonstrated tremendous reliability, as well as willingness to support the Manitoba Section towards continued success. He has grown from his experiences with CIFST, and his strong leadership and communication skills are an asset to CIFST. He is a role model for his peers, believing that volunteering is an excellent platform for students and professionals alike to share and seek knowledge or expertise.
